World of Wheels from a Photographer's Perspective
Calgary has a large automotive scene; from lifted trucks to tricked out imports, slammed hot rods and perfectly preserved classic cars. While fiercely competitive on the open road, they all come together during the World of Wheels.
Ten Two Media made an appearance at the Calgary World of Wheels, and written below is an insiders scoop, from a passionate car-guy/photographer's point of view. Not to mention, Ten Two Media offers automotive photography and video shoots, so this was a nice place to potentially meet clients and get some nice photographs.
The cars at World of Wheels this year fantastic. There were from souped up muscle cars, insane engine builds and imports with engine bays that lit up like the Vegas Strip. However, indoor lighting is a source of trouble for every photographer, and paired with high shine waxed body panels, made for an interesting photoshoot.
I set the Nikon to manual and boosted the shutter speed. The quick shutter made up for the lack of a tripod. Photography with multiple angles was played around with, and the cars with interesting colors were the center of focus. I found that the car owners were quick to chat up great conversation. One Chevelle SS owner told me about his build and the hardships he faced. There was plenty of wonderfully gleaming pride on display.
I found that unlike staged automotive photography, you must account for the human aspect at car shows. There are people walking around, cars next to one another, angles unobtainable and fenced off area. But they add to the glamor of the photoshoot, and produce an effect desirable for the circumstance. Seeing other beautiful cars behind the subject adds perspective and captures the atmosphere.
This show is a definite must for anyone who likes cars, and an automotive photographer's dream!
